Cyanotype Print Exploration

This project is an exploration of composition, texture, and the interaction between pre-existing and handmade elements through the cyanotype printing process. By combining typography, found objects, and painted or drawn elements, the goal is to create a layered visual narrative where structure meets spontaneity.

Assignment Brief.

My professor tasked students with creating cyanotype prints by integrating typography, found objects, and artistic techniques such as painting and drawing. The project required us to experiment with transparency, negative and positive space, and layering techniques to construct compelling visual compositions. Additionally, we were asked to select 1-3 words that define their artistic practice, using typefaces from a previous assignment to incorporate them into their cyanotype pieces. The final work was expected to demonstrate a strong response to the prompt and showcase craftsmanship, creativity, and technical execution.

Skills.

This project required a combination of technical and creative skills. Knowledge of composition, typography, and visual hierarchy was crucial in arranging elements effectively. Additionally, I applied craftsmanship in cutting, painting, and assembling materials. The cyanotype printing process also required technical precision in coating, exposing, and developing the prints. Critical thinking and problem-solving were essential in selecting materials and refining compositions to achieve the desired aesthetic and conceptual impact.

Sketching, Building, Refining.

The process began with gathering materials, including found objects, transparencies and pre-designed typography elements. I then prepared their cyanotype paper by coating it with light-sensitive fluid 24 hours before printing. Arranging the composition involved careful placement of objects and type on the treated paper, considering contrast, opacity, and layering. The paper was then exposed to sunlight or an exposure unit to develop the prints. After rinsing, drying, and finalizing, I assessed their work, making additional refinements if needed. Some prep work, such as creating transparencies or additional drawings, was done outside of class to enhance the final composition.

Final Curation.

The final stage focused on refining and presenting the cyanotype prints. Attention was given to craftsmanship, ensuring clean execution and a strong visual impact. I curated my work by selecting a compelling composition of popcorn, leaves flowers and a picture of my sisters and myself, considering balance, contrast and conceptual depth. The project culminated in a final display, showcasing the fusion of typography, found objects and artistic experimentation through the cyanotype process.
